Wide Loads: Tips on Transporting Oversized Items Safely

Transporting heavy machinery and other things like large boats and even houses can be dangerous. Well, not so much if you know the right precautions to be taken. In this article, we will shed light on the safest ways to carry massive loads via road.

Know the Limits

Every truck and trailer has its limits. The mistake drivers often tend to make is that they overlook this limit and go on adding weight to the transport until it is on the verge of overflowing. Different states and cities also have their limits to what weight a truck-haul driver could carry.

In general, the legal load width is often between eight and nine feet while the maximum allowed height is also the same. A weight of approximately 46,000 pounds is allowed. However, as mentioned, these limits can vary from place to place.

Not following them not only leaves you prone to potential fines and jail time, but it also affects the driving capabilities of your drive. This can translate into major truck accidents a common cause of death around the world.

Know the Difference

When you are transporting oversized items, it is vital that you know you are carrying one. Significant times, drivers don’t even know that they are moving things that are considered oversized. Know the per-axle limit of your drive.

Also, bear it in mind that flatbed drivers necessarily need to obtain permits. If you are carrying an item that can be disassembled, you probably won’t get the license to take it in one piece.

Secure the Load

Weight is not the only matter of concern while transporting oversized items. You also need to ensure that large objects such as rural and residential building structures, machinery sheds, garages, etc  do not become dislodged while you are on the go.

In order to keep the object safe, you should use the right straps to hold the carriage tucked in place.

A right way to strap the object is to attach an end of the strap to a firm part of your truck, then run it over the carriage, and attach the other end of the belt to the adjacent firm part on your truck.

Continue doing this and use multiple straps until the point that the object cannot literally move from their place.

Having a few standard safety items such as witches hats, strobe truck warning lights, etc, which can be placed outside the truck during stops or unexpected incidents is also a good idea.

The Right Drive

There are several different types of truck hauls that you can use for different things. If you have a regular-height flat object to carry, you can use a flatbed trailer. Similarly, moving object of larger heights or multiple sizes can be a perfect fit for lowboy trailer.

There are several other types of transports that you can use depending on the object you are carrying. The bottom line is to make sure that it stays fit inside the back of your truck.

This is also important because if the object even has moveable space inside the container, it can either be a subject to potential damage or the one causing it.

Mapping it Out

It is of utmost importance that you map your possible routes out before the trip. Improper routes may lead you to roads with high traffic, the last thing you would want while taking a large cargo along.

This is also important because you need to avoid damaged roads or those that are under construction.

Ignoring the safety aspects of transporting oversized items can be a grave danger, not only for you, but for others around you as well.
